Learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart./Aprendan de mi, porque soy paciente y humilde de corazón.—Matthew/Mateo 11:29
Pope Francis released an encyclical on the Sacred Heart of Jesus this past October. Titled “Dilexit Nos” (He Loved Us) he started out saying that historically the “symbol of the heart has often been used to express the love of Jesus Christ,” but asked if this symbol is still meaningful for us today. Francis thinks it is, and pulling from Saints devoted to the Sacred Heart and other writings, he builds his case.
In helping us to rediscover the importance of the Heart of Jesus Francis points out that “it is essential to realize that our relationship with the Person of Jesus Christ is one of friendship and adoration, drawn by the love represented under the image of his heart.”
Pope Francis is known for reminding us that we are a missionary people. How the Sacred Heart plays into this is that “our union with Christ is meant not only to satisfy our own thirst but also to make us springs of water for others. Mission becomes a matter of love. As we contemplate the Sacred Heart, mission becomes love.”
Devotion to the Sacred Heart can play out in many ways, as Francis showed, but the hope is that in the end we can say as Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque did, “...and so this loveable Heart, being our all in all, we too no longer live our own lives, but it is He who lives within us.”
Showcasing SHA talent: Arianna is preparing us to welcome the Sacred Heart of Jesus by getting us ready for Christmas.
