Last year, in a card my mentor send me, she included a non-traditional blessing. I liked it when I first read it and I turn to it again this week after all the traditional and non-traditional blessings I have received after my mum died last Saturday. They have made all the difference in getting through these difficult weeks. These blessings, both the ones I have received and the ones in the prayer below, are living out Jesus' coming in peace and sending us in peace—the peace of Christ is how us we live from deep within our hearts.
A Non-Traditional Blessing by Sr. Ruth Fox, OSB
May God bless you with discontent with easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you live from deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, abuse, and exploitation of people, so that you will work for justice, equality, and peace.
May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you will reach out your hand to comfort them and to change their pain to joy.
May God bless you with the foolishness to think you can make a difference in this world, so that you will do things which others tell you cannot be done…
