Parent Letter Faith Reflection

Remember you are held safe. You are loved. You are protected. You are in communion with God and with those who God has sent you. What is of God will last. It belongs to the eternal life. Choose it, and it will be yours. - Henry Nouwen

On the Eureka Street side of the church near the doors you will see an image of Saint Bernardine of Siena holding the IHS monogram. When we became the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community over 10 years ago we were gifted with this art because St. Bernardine (San Bernardino in Spanish) not only helped to popularize devotion to the Holy Name using this monogram in the 1400s, but he is also co-patron of our diocese (Our Lady of Guadalupe is our other co-patron). IHS is the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek. These initials later came to also represent Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, savior of humankind).

You will also find this same icon at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, the Serra House of Study in Grand Terrace, and St. Bernardine Parish in San Bernardino, the mother parish of our diocese.

The Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus was on January 3rd but we can still honor our parish feast day throughout this month by praying and reflecting on some of Jesus’ titles from the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus: Jesus, Good Shepherd, as we journey together may you be our Model of Goodness. Prince of Peace, like you may we be Gentle and Humble of Heart as we are transformed into the prophets and missionaries you call us to be. Dawn of Justice, through your Holy Name may we be filled with everlasting joy. Amen.

Showcasing SHA talent: Emma in 3rd grade is following the Magi. She painted them for us as they bring gifts to the child Jesus.
